It’s time to break it down into Demon Time!

Date: October 26, 2023Author: Valkyrjia 1 Comment

Beyond hell and back; from the tell-tale solo release of Demoncore last year to hit after hit of solid collaborations and creation, we’ve all begun to wonder – will anything slow this Demon down?

Having released previous favourites that I still listen to on the daily like “100 Naxi Scalps“, “Semi-Dead Status“, and his newest release “We Are Venom!” with Ian I-Cee, I wasn’t surprised that another bombshell would be dropped so quickly.

Sam Astaroth has done nothing beyond feverishly chasing his dreams, sacrificing countless opportunities and safety nets to achieve what most believe to be impossible. From his honest and authentic approach, Sam pushed himself beyond the binds of mere focus and restraint, unleashing a hellish fury unparalleled in this age. Despite his Demonic mantle, Sam evokes determination, self-value, honesty, and a sense of purpose above all. He calls to what drives you. What denies you. And asks – what are you worth to yourself?

His newest EP, Demon Time, dropped on October 6th, 2023, and once again sees Sam joined by the dynamic forces that aid in his Demonic expedition. Unleashing a storm unlike any other, Sam and his collaborative partners move from soul-binding benders, through twisted fantasy, and down darkened paths to create a reality that’s a treat to both old and new listeners alike.

The title track, “Demon Time,” is a demoncore classic. Chanting in our ears in a blend of mystery and horror, the back beat of this track is only enhanced by its crushing vocal prowess. Enigmatic as always, Sam keeps that signature sound at the helm, utilizing a boost of mixed vocal ups and downs to start us off on our creepy downward spiral into the abyss.

Offering a spin on a classic sound, “Halo” drops in with Vitamjn for a catchy, and almost intoxicating concoction that’s short but lingering. I enjoy the quick punches, ensnaring serpentine harmony, and small bits of viciousness balanced by an almost apathetic tone. The elements that co-exist and settle into one make this track an easy listen, and a quick ear-worm that kicks up its feet for a long-term stay.

“SpellTrain” takes the momentum of “Halo” and gives it a justified boost. B-train joins Sam to bring in a dark rap battle that leaves its mark on the heavens. Short and snappy, this track wastes no time in bearing claws and fangs to remind us this is Demoncore at its very darkest.

“Fuck the Corporate Culture” ramps up the horror; slowing pace with a beat that gets you focused on lyrical composition instead of being captivated by the music, this track grabs you by the face, demanding you listen closely.

“I’m so sick and tired of these soul sucking motherfxckers,” cannot more simply express society’s viewpoint on ‘grind’ culture. The constant need to climb the ladder, hustle, grind to the top and for what? And for who? Another nod to Sam’s virtues that come through on this track to remind listeners that you are your own person, and it’s time to take hold of your future. It’s haunting and intrusive, snaking its way through your ears to boost that sneer and evoke a vicious grin. It offers more than just fury – it offers understanding.

The beat picks up on “Equaliz3r” seeing Sam joined by the forces of NylahDoll & Damian. Cranking the metal aspect of Demoncore, this track continues the passion of self-worth and value of oneself from the very beginning.

“You need to be who you are in this world, no matter at what cost. And if by any means that is not possible then change your world.“

Reminiscent of Babymetal in sound, Nylahdoll brings in a sultry yet divine tone as if luring us in, only to tear is apart in a moment. The beautiful mixture of heavy bass and vocal contrasts is intriguing and perfectly expresses the level of balance this track seeks to establish. Bringing in gentleness through a relentless hell, this track places value on balancing self, letting us explore our expression on a journey of heavy metal, trap, and enrapturing vocals.

“Your Soul is Mine” – Shang Tsung comes in swinging, bringing the pain once again. Putting the Demon back in Demoncore, Sam belts out his roots on this track with an array of hellish growls and frightening screeches to bring us back to the hellfire. Deepening the unholy feel is a righteous bass beat that amplifies the haunting soundscape, leaving us with a track that’s both terrifying and downright intense.

“Ashura” features the rap snaps of Mvko that bounces over an infectious beat that puts you on the asphalt to witness the breakdown. One of my favourites for its eerie catchiness and seamless vocals, this track hits hard at nearly 3 minutes in length, and has to be listened to at max volume. It’s an instant classic, one easily slapped on any playlist to be blasted from midnight and beyond. It’s captivating, dancey, and almost trance-like, making it the perfect beat for any atmosphere.

Coming in to clear the ring is “Street Fighter” featuring Lil Tytan. Another catchy track, this one goes on a vocal high, equipping a deep beat for momentum rather than focus. At just over 2 minutes, it pulls you in with curiosity before beating you down with an endless release of repetitive keys and nasty verses.

Coming in to end the battle – it’s time to “Execute“! Perfectly ending this EP, Kirin Kira jumps in to keep energy high on a track that’s not too speedy or too slow but exquisitely balanced. It’s as if Sam knew this track would harmonize flawlessly so when it was time to shut it all down, he knew just how to execute his finale.

Overall, the Demon Time EP is balanced with an eerie calm, and reminiscent highs as necessary. Yet again we see another side of this genre-mastering Maestro as he uses Demoncore to utilize rap battles, heavy beats, catchy verses, and a stellar guest line-up. Stacking the front lines for the ultimnate showdown, this EP is different and yet still entirely Sam Astaroth, giving us a new plate to enjoy from this seemingly endless feast of musical exploration.
