Progressive metal monsters, Dust Orchard, has released their new single “Hours in the Void“. Hailing from Helsinki, Finland, these violin-led melodic metallers delve into a rich blend of riff-driven melodies founded in heavy metal. After their 2022 EP release, and a major lineup restructuring, Dust Orchard has shifted into a new era with refreshing focus, and brand new material in the pipeline. “Hours in the Void” turns the page in a new book; tackling ambition, darkness, and installing dynamics never heard before.

Riding in on thunderous riffs and lightning-like violins, the eclectic blend of cleans and growls melts together in harmony. “Hours in the Void” reminisces on desperation; the fight for survival in an apocalyptic future. With progressive structure leveling on heavy riffs and melodic, atmospheric builds, this track showcases the band’s unique skill-set without sacrificing completion.
Violinist Vegard Lillevoll describes the song as a statement of intent: “I think ‘Hours in the Void’ lights the way forward for the new metamorphosis of Dust Orchard. It’s lofty, catchy and heavy in all the right places.”
Founder and guitarist Petri Siikander highlights the song’s scene-setting approach and the way the arrangement pivots between extremes: “I try to paint a picture with every song. Usually I’ll have a specific scenery and feeling in mind when writing… The upcoming single has a heavy intro, trashy metal growls, an epic chorus and some Rush stuff in the middle. What’s not to love?”
Initially caught off guard, I was immediately enthralled by this track’s vicious introduction. Curious, I pressed on to hear dynamic cleans dueling the melodic riffs threatening its back. With moments of speed embracing perfectly-timed growls, this track rides not only on its melodic tell-tale, but its intricate blend of ever-changing, yet balanced, instrumentals. There are moments of calm and rest, before sliding seamlessly into sheer chaos. For those looking to move along, or head-bang along, this offers the perfect blend of both. An excellent ride-along track, or sing along as the cleans soar high, and the riffs grind low. Certainly not the last of Dust Orchard I’ll be listening to.
Established in 2018, Dust Orchard shook off the dust and dirt of the undergrowth with a single purpose: create progressive metal that is unpredictable, yet still emotionally familiar. Rooted deep in instrumentation, the band leads with violin and melody, bonded by guitar-heavy structure which grants songs that beautiful transition from raw metal prowess to atmospheric soul-searching calm.
