From the frozen void of the Canadian border comes Windsor’s very own Hell is Other People with their emotionally charged album – Moirae.

Hell is Other People writes:
” ‘Moirae’ is an Ancient Greek term referring to three figures that are personifications of destiny. The role of the Moirae is to ensure that everyone lives out their destiny as assigned to them by the laws of the universe. We explore this necessary human process of birth, proliferation and death through these songs, couched in metaphor and esoteric meaning so the listener can interpret them as they see fit.”

Combining elements of haunting ambiance with complex riff work and instrumental eeriness, Moirae sets its sights on immersing listeners in a vast world of mystery and grey through dynamic rhythm and intense sound.

Opening with the title track, “Moirae”, that dynamic element ensnares the senses, soaring in on calm yet captivating drums and a gentleness that portrays the soundscapes before us. It’s the scene of self-discovery and exploration through slow steps and leaps of hope echoed by an encompassing guitar that mimics the repetitive questions in our mind. At just under 7-minutes, “Moirae” strides in to unveil the album’s tales of wonder and woe with gracefully crafted melody, finessed by harsh, foreboding vocals.

“Fates” picks at the heaviness of Moirae and adds depth. The gentleness has passed, with the sense of wonder now cast in shadow and demise. The extension of cruelty greets our once curious gaze and we withdraw in regret, yet unable to pull away. It’s the sound of conflict, painted by our consequence. The movement throughout, from confusion to clarity is one of embracing the hand dealt, and the steps forward regardless of stride or speed.

“Degrade” slides in to perfectly capture the elements of “Fates” as we move forward. Spanning at nearly 8-minutes in length, this track depicts human persistence with heightened rhythm and prominent snare Despite the hand dealt, we have chosen the path forward to resist the Moirae and pave the way of our future, our way. However, the rapture of shot-firing drumbeats and hastened strings tells us of our ruin, and how our yearning to alter our destiny will bring heartbreak and despair.

The essence of turmoil continues through the appropriately titled “Loss”. The echo of a grinding guitar ruptures the mind, as if in attempt to spring us to our senses. A calamity of drumbeats rinses away any remains of tranquility as harsh vocals commence and remind us of our downfall. To try and break our chains, to resist what the Moirae have decided, is to bring about further misfortune. This track is a near 9-minutes journey through reflection and regret. The cascade of rigidness that comes in stern before being battered and broken only replicates our own sorrow as we must now face the consequence to our action. It’s gloomy yet dynamically portrayed through expressive instrumentals and passionate cries that truly encompass that feeling of loss.

The finale of our fate comes with “Atropos”, a 13-and a half minute ode to our acceptance and our understanding. We are bound by the Moirae, destined to return to earth and ash as all living things do. It’s the harsh lesson of understanding no matter the path chosen, the destination will never change. Despite conflict and refuge, the only result to our decisions in self-gain is whether divinity accepts our livelihood or not. An embrace through thought-provoking rhythm, and heinous bass lines carry that feeling of knowing, the reflection of our journey, and the paths we chose that lead to our fate. It’s a memory of curiosity and chaos, resistance and pride that’s delicately yet vividly displayed through jazz-like sound, and a rise into screams of torment. Each passing minute explores another emotion through a complex measure of sound and integrity that Hell is Other People flawlessly executes.

In closing, Moirae is more than a simple 5-track jaunt through a blackened, abysmal timeline. It’s a carefully curated depiction of humanity’s journey through birth, life, and death that is bound by a pre-determined fate, no matter the choices made. It’s the emotional expedition of conflict, action, and consequence that as we twist and turn through the roads before us, we cannot escape fate. This insightful exploration is beautifully captured in layered instrumentals and passionate performance with Hell is Other People masking no raw emotion as they shift from calm and curious rhythm to unbridled rage and sorrow. Spastic riffs and rugged bass lines; it’s Blackened Metal, with hardcore essence that’s sure to please the palette of Metal listeners across the globe.
