Mayan Metallers DEATH SCYTHE release “Ek Balam”

Date: February 29, 2024Author: Valkyrjia 0 Comments

The Mayan Melodic Death Metal unit Death Scythe unveil ancient history with their new single – “Ek Balam“. Dancing on a balance of Mayan lore and Melodeath sound, this track is sure to ensnare listeners through both curiosity and intensity.

The band explains the legends that inspired their latest track: “‘Ek Balam,’ a musical tribute to the Mayan deity, unveils the mystical aura of a cosmic jaguar. Amidst the celestial canvas, Ek Balam emerges as the guardian of the night, the keeper of time, and the protector of the skies. With fiery eyes and a cosmic essence, Ek Balam symbolizes the seamless connection between the earthly and celestial realms. The lyrics narrate the legend of this divine jaguar, a powerful and enigmatic entity gracefully dancing among the stars, resonating with an ethereal melody in the expansive tapestry of the night.”

Once more mixing folklore with Metal, Death Scythe carve out the visual take of their history through unstoppable rhythm and captivating sound. It’s the eyes shining at you in the shadows, watching your every move. The unseen force tracking your every step, and yet at every turn, your vision betrays you. Is anything there at all? Or are the celestial and earthly beginning to intertwine?

It’s heavy, catchy, and beyond impact with stunning harsh vocals and a melody that’s as intriguing as the legends it portrays.

With even their chosen artwork touching upon the myth and legend of Mayan dieties and tales, Death Scythe continues to embrace the mysticism and complexity that comes with blending history and metal.

Formed in 2003 by Roberto Cervera and Gerardo Mendoza in Mérida, Yucatán, México, the band’s original goal was solely to play pure melodic death metal. In 2006, the band released their first self-produced demo titled “Hollow Darkness.”

After rising popularity in the local scene that frizzled due to a 9-year split, the band returned in 2018 with a heavy stage presence and a vow to work on new music.

Death Scythe is:
Gerardo Mendoza  (Vocals)
Roberto Cervera  (Guitars)
Rafael Barreiro (Guitars)
David Montero (Bass)
Ricardo Cruz  (Drums)

You can keep up with the band by following them on their socials like Facebook and Instagram, as well as subscribing to their YouTube, and checking them out on Bandcamp.
